The quiz begins with 3/4 + 2/3. Fourths and thirds are different-sized parts, so convert both fractions to twelfths before adding the numerators.
Build a common denominator
A 3:5 ratio describes 8 total parts, not two unrelated numbers
If a total of 40 is split in the ratio 3:5, first find the size of one ratio part, then rebuild the quantity you need.
Use benchmark percentages to build more complicated ones
The current test asks for 15% of 200. In Grade 6, it is useful to see 15% as 10% + 5%, but also as the decimal multiplier 0.15.

For -6 + 14, start at -6 and move 14 units to the right. Crossing zero is simply part of the movement.
Expressions describe a rule; equations ask for a value that makes two sides equal
The quiz includes both types. Keeping that distinction clear helps prevent students from trying to “solve” an expression that has no equals sign.

Combine only like terms. The constant remains separate from the x-terms.

Undo the operation applied to the variable while keeping both sides balanced.

The rectangle question asks for perimeter, so adding the side lengths around the outside is the correct model. Multiplying 18 × 7 would answer a different question: area.

Count favorable outcomes and divide by the total number of possible outcomes in the model.
Three errors that become important as math gets more abstract
Adding unlike denominators directly
3/4 + 2/3 is not 5/7. First make the parts the same size.
Combining unlike algebraic terms
7x and -2 are not like terms, so 7x - 2 cannot be reduced to 5x.
Mixing up perimeter and area
Perimeter uses linear units such as cm; area uses square units such as cm².
