The official distribution gives more questions to Algebra and Advanced Math, while Problem-Solving and Data Analysis and Geometry and Trigonometry appear in smaller but still important groups.

These examples show the level this section should aim for: several are short to calculate, but only after you recognize the underlying equation, function, ratio, or geometric relationship.

Algebra

The line 3x + 2y = 18 is translated upward by 4 units. Which equation represents the translated line?

Replace y by y − 4 in the original equation because a vertical translation changes the input to the original relation.

3x + 2(y − 4) = 18 → 3x + 2y = 26.
Advanced Math

A quadratic function has zeros at x = −3 and x = 5 and passes through (0, −30). Find the function.

Start from factored form and use the point to determine the leading coefficient.

f(x) = a(x + 3)(x − 5). Since −30 = a(3)(−5), a = 2. Therefore f(x) = 2(x + 3)(x − 5).
Data Analysis

A population increases by 6% each year. If it is 42,000 now, which expression gives the population after t years?

Repeated percentage growth is exponential, not linear.

P(t) = 42,000(1.06)^t.
Geometry & Trigonometry

In a right triangle, tan θ = 5/12. If the hypotenuse is 39, find the side opposite θ.

The 5–12–13 ratio gives the triangle's scale factor directly.

Hypotenuse 13k = 39, so k = 3. The opposite side is 5k = 15.
Calculator judgment

The calculator is available, but not every problem is faster with it

SAT Math rewards choosing an efficient representation. Sometimes graphing or numerical solving is useful; other times a factorization, substitution, or structural observation is faster than entering anything.

Use technology deliberately

Ask whether the calculator removes work or merely moves the work.

If a problem is designed around recognizing structure, typing the entire expression into a calculator may be slower than a few lines of algebra.

Graph it

Useful for intersections, zeros, comparing functions, or checking the number of solutions to an equation.

Use a table

Useful when a function changes predictably and the question asks for a particular input-output relationship.

Stay symbolic

Factoring, substitution, proportional reasoning, and exact simplification are often faster by hand.

Check, do not depend

Use a calculator to verify a result when helpful, but keep enough mathematical reasoning to notice an incorrect entry or interpretation.

Adaptive test strategy

Accuracy in the first module matters more than rushing for a few extra seconds

Because the digital SAT adapts after the first Math module, practice should include careful early work, efficient decisions on medium questions, and a plan for questions that threaten to consume too much time.

Bank reliable points first

Do not turn a manageable linear equation or percentage question into a careless miss by solving too quickly.

Recognize the structure before calculating

Ask whether the question is linear, quadratic, exponential, proportional, statistical, or geometric before choosing a method.

Mark expensive questions and return

If a question is taking disproportionate time, preserve the rest of the module and return after securing easier points.

Common SAT Math traps

Many wrong answers are mathematically reasonable answers to a slightly different question

SAT distractors often reflect a missed condition, wrong unit, incomplete percent change, or answer to an intermediate step. Read the target quantity again before selecting or entering the final answer.

You may correctly find x even when the question asks for 2x + 3, the perimeter, or a percentage based on x.

Treating exponential change as linear

A fixed percentage increase acts on the new amount each period, so repeated growth uses a multiplier raised to a power.

Look for repeated percent growth or decay.
Context

Ignoring units or restrictions

An algebraic solution may be impossible in context because a length, time, population, or probability cannot take every real value.

How many questions are on the SAT Math section?

The SAT Math section contains 44 questions and lasts 70 minutes. It is divided into two modules of 35 minutes each.

Yes. The digital SAT uses two Math modules. Performance on the first module affects the difficulty of the second module.

Can I use a calculator on SAT Math?

Are all SAT Math questions multiple choice?

No. Most questions are multiple choice, but some Math questions are student-produced response questions where you enter the answer instead of selecting an option.

What is the best way to practice SAT Math?

Use focused practice to fix specific weak domains, then move to mixed timed sets. Review every missed question by identifying whether the error came from the mathematical concept, the setup, algebraic manipulation, calculator use, or time pressure.
